Have Your Dust “Bite The Dust”

cleanair

While most people are ditching their winter coats and rejoicing when spring arrives, other people are dreading spring due to the allergens, pollen, and dust it brings.

Spring’s dramatic changes aren’t limited to greenery and flowers–changes also occur in the very air we breathe, which for some people poses a serious inconvenience. If you don’t want to be breathing or accidentally eating dust, then you might need to evaluate what your air quality is like at home.

The Risk of Poor Air Quality

healthissuesWhen you first installed your HVAC system, you might have noticed an improvement in air quality in your home. You and your family might have breathed easier and saw a reduction in the severity of allergies.

However, if you didn’t keep up with maintaining your HVAC system and regularly changing its air filters, then it might not be working at its full capacity. This could cause a degradation in air quality over time, leading to compromised air quality.

If your home’s air quality decreases enough, it can lead to health issues like allergies or complicate lung diseases like asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema. Although you have little power over things like smog and outdoor air pollution, you can have control over the air that you breathe in your own home.

Protecting Yourself With Air Filters

airfilterOne of the most important ways you can control the air in your home is to regularly change the air filter in your HVAC system. One of the most common mistakes people make is to forget or to refuse to change their air filters as often as they should.

This not only affects the purity of your home’s air but also affects your HVAC system and puts it at risk for damage. Generally, the number of times you need to change your air filter will depend on your living situation and the health of the person(s) living in your home.

For a vacation home rarely used or a home in the country, you might only need to change your filter once a year. If you’re using a cheap filter (which isn’t recommended), you might need to change the filter every thirty days. If you’re using a high-quality filter, you might only need to change it every 6 months.

Generally, though, pleated air filters would be changed every three months for best results. If you or a loved one suffers from allergies, change the air filter every six weeks. For those with pets, change the filter every two months, and for those with kids, change it every two to three months. There’s no strict rule that fits everyone.

Changing your air filter can depend on things like how often you use your HVAC machine and if the filter looks dusty or smells musty. If you don’t know how often you should be changing your filter, Energy Sharks Heating & Air would be happy to consult with you and give you guidelines to make sure dust and other allergens are being filtered out of the precious air you breathe.

Clean Air For The Win

Whether or not you suffer from allergies, breathing clean air is just overall better for you. In an already complicated life, it gives you one less thing to worry about. You can rest assured that you and your friends or the loved ones who come under your roof won’t be exposed to high amounts of allergens.

Breathing air filled with pollutants, dust, and allergens can lead to symptoms like a runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, and a sinus headache. Prolonged poor air quality can eventually lead to infections, lung cancers, and lasting lung diseases like asthma.

Anything you can do to improve indoor air quality–be it not using cleaners with heavy chemicals or be it keeping your HVAC system in good working condition–will help you stay healthy in the long run.
