It seems like there’s a national holiday for just about everything. There’s cheese day, left-handers day, bean day – why not air conditioning day? That’s right, July 17th is National Air Conditioning day!

We are excited to celebrate because it’s hard to imagine life without the comfort of air conditioning in our homes. Things get pretty hot and sweaty really quickly without it. So for National AC day, there are some things you can do to make sure you stay cool this summer!

Routine maintenance on your air conditioning unit, knowing when it’s time to replace your unit, and cleaning your air ducts are all ways to keep your AC up and running.

Maintaining Your Air Conditioner

To keep your unit going strong for longer, perform routine air conditioning maintenance. Check the fan to make sure no leaves or twigs are caught inside.

It could even be as simple as changing a filter, which is a pretty inexpensive way to keep your air conditioner running efficiently. If you’re using a window unit, just cleaning any mold or dirt buildup from the outside is a good way to maintain your unit.

Knowing When You Need a Replacement

acreplacementYour AC unit can last a decade or more if it’s treated properly, but there will come a time when it just needs to be replaced. If you find that you’re constantly having to repair parts on a unit ten years or older, chances are it’s time for an AC replacement.

Other signs it may be time to consider a replacement include poor efficiency of your air conditioner or rising energy bills. If your unit is just not keeping your home comfortable, there’s a good chance it’s time to replace it.

You may also be wondering why your energy bill seems to keep rising. The power company hasn’t raised its rates but the bill just keeps stacking up. This could be an indicator your AC unit is being overworked or it’s just too old.

Cleaning Your Air Ducts

ductcleaningIt may not have occurred to you, but it’s true that duct cleaning can be just as important as cleaning your AC unit. Your ductwork is responsible for distributing air throughout your home, so if they’re dirty, chances are your home isn’t as cool as it should be.

It’s a possibility that mold and dust circulating through your system and into living spaces may cause issues with allergies or other illness for people living in the home.

Duct cleaning isn’t necessary all the time, but if there’s visible dust in the ducts or noticeable allergens like pet hair coming from the registers, it may be time to schedule a professional.

We’re all aware of just how important our air conditioners are to keep us happy and comfortable in the heat of the summer months, so share this blog on your social media to thank an HVAC tech you know for keeping you cool!
